Law of Roleplay Sequels

I was writing out my Internet life story on the hrwiki forums, and I got up to the roleplay series I was in in 2002/3. And that's when I realised that roleplay sequels always make less sense than the originals. Or are exactly the same in every way, if I recall some of the roleplays on the KND forum correctly.

I shall call it Shwoo's Law of Roleplay Sequels! I'll be famous! (Is joking about the being famous part if it's not obvious)

I have never seen a roleplay sequel that doesn't fit that, with the only exception I can think of being the CAPTURED/FORTH/DEMON trilogy I did with Nathalie and Numbuh Double Zero. RPG and RPG 2, WARPED and DISTORTED, CHEER and whatever the sequel to CHEER was called, Anime Roleplay and Anime Roleplay 2... I'm not sure why this is, but I think it's something to do with the normal things being exhausted in the original plot, maybe? Or the players being more comfortable with each other after playing through a whole roleplay and are more likely to introduce weird things because they know the other players wouldn't be too freaked out by them.

CAPTURED, FORTH and DEMON stayed about as coherent as each other, except for a rough patch towards the end of FORTH, because the plot of FORTH was obvious from the events of CAPTURED, and the plot of DEMON was extremely obvious from the events of FORTH. Also, with people I roleplayed with a lot, the stories we did in the generalised, non-specific OC continuity tended to make less sense than the others, even if they weren't sequels to anything in particular. We were continually reaching for new ways for the characters to be portrayed to keep them interesting, I think. Unless someone else can think of a better reason for Numbuh 239 randomly deciding to take a trip to the future with Numbuh Six and Numbuh 88 when she shouldn't actually know how to make a functional time machine in such a short time, let alone ones that can take return trips.

Or maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about and should go to bed.

In other news, I'm more interested in the quite dark backstory to the villains in the Homestar Runner anime type story than the story itself. It practically writes itself. Pity it's so spoilery, and pity I had to change the characters' names because it bothered me to think of all this dark stuff as Homestar Runner related. Ah well, at least it's fun to write.

Hiatus from Internet = Not going very well so far.

After a long and hard day hiding from... being social and getting any work done, I suddenly want to dig out my old Japanese textbook from year nine and do some work from it. So I think I will. If it is my lot to want to learn things all the time, then I suppose I shall have to bear it. (martyred sigh) I seem to be on a Japanese kick at the moment.

And a vaguely Japanese related note, I think I've been taking the Homestar anime thing too seriously and should lighten up a bit. I was never quite delusional enough to believe I was creating great literature, but... I'm a bit too much of a perfectionist. I'm just doing it for fun, the world won't end if I can't figure out how to make the dialogue less stilted. I guess. I've just never got so much interest in a fanfiction project before, and I don't want to mess it up.

Uh... check out [info]bsc_snark. It's awesome.

So of course now I'm not tired. When I should be in bed. And I think I'll go to bed. I feel bad about wasting this awake time, but... I should at least try to keep normal hours.

But first, I need to put one of my characters through a litmus test. Not because I think he's a Stu. I know he's not. I just wonder what the test would give me. I love how inaccurate they can be.

EDIT: Hahahaha, I got "kill it dead" on the stricter test. The lesson is, don't make any character ever a survivor of horrific abuse, no matter how messed up it may have made them.

Why would a character being unable to form intimate relationships make them more of a Sue/Stu? I don't understand.

I'm so paranoid about my writing. It's hilarious. Right now I know that my writing is horrible because the scenes all have to do with each other and are leading up to something I planned out months ago. I can see that this does not actually indicate bad writing, but it doesn't stop me from worrying about how much I suck. The scenes could stand to be a little longer though.

And now, I must away to the land of recorders and no Internet for the weekend. Bye.

Was "I must away" good grammar in time period, ever? I'm kind of tired...

Homestar Runner Fandom

The attitude that there shouldn't be a Homestar Runner Wii game because Homestar Runner isn't megapopular anymore really irritates me. Probably I shouldn't googled '"Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People" "five years"' in that case, but I only did that once. Anyway, of course it's not megapopular anymore. Nothing can stay that popular for that long, The Public has a very short attention span. Just because these particular people got bored with it and haven't thought about it in years doesn't mean that the site doesn't exist anymore. That's a very self-centred view. And stupid.

Homestar Runner is still popular, because the wiki is up-to-date, the creators can still live off merchandise sales, and someone keeps going around adding new examples to the TV Tropes Wiki every time a new cartoon comes out. And most of the time it's not me. People don't link to it anymore because everyone's supposed to have heard of it by now. But it's five years on and not everybody has.

On a related note, I really enjoyed the start of the Homestar Runner crossover fic [info]chakramchucker put up on her journal. I also really enjoyed the beginning to a Homestar Runner fic recently put up on fanfiction.net and think it has a lot of promise. I can barely remember the last time I read a Homestar Runner fic for the first time and really enjoyed it. Is Homestar Runner fanfiction having a renaissance? Am I just lightening up? Am I overreacting? It's probably that last one. Still, it's heartening.

I wish there was a good Homestar Runner forum around. I've developed a theory about what's happened in the various hrwiki communities. The forum tends to reject anyone who's not something of a jerk and jaded like a lot of the members. At the very least, they reject people who are new to the Internet. Not knowing of anywhere else to go, the newbies, who at times border on n00bs, go to either the knowledge base or the fanstuff wiki. The knowledge base is full of intelligent people who don't bite the newcomers to their faces, but it also requires effort and for the majority of edits to be related to the project, so people who don't enjoy picking apart an internet cartoon so much go to the fanstuff wiki, which doesn't require so much effort. Essentially, they're just there because they want to socialise with other Homestar Runner fans and the forum doesn't want them. They're not there to make fanstuff, something I figured out a long time ago anyway. But they feel obligated to make it anyway, and see it as the best route to becoming popular. So they do, and it usually turns out not very good. And then they get bored and threaten to leave until the friends they've made convince them not to, but that's common behaviour for twelve-year-olds on the Internet. I know I did it a couple of times when I was twelve.

So the forum is stuck in a rut of being jerks to or ignoring or just plain not attracting people who are different, and then complaining about how low the forum has sunk. I've only been there since September 2006, so I wouldn't know, but at the moment I'm reading a post by The Noid saying that the reason he liked the forum in the past was the friendliness, so that sounds like sinking to me. The fanstuff is stuck in a rut of being so full of kids that nobody else will touch it. The knowledge base is flourishing as far as I know, but has to restrict non-wiki discussion to their IRC channel, which doesn't seem to perpetuate itself as well as a forum. Plus I'm not good at real time chat. The people who don't fit into any of the majorities of the three communities, which constitute some of the best people in the fandom in my probably biased opinion, seem to hang around here and around deviantART.

But all this is useful for making personifications of the hrwiki communities and the loosely defined fourth community. Not that many other people other than me would think of that. But I did, and the interaction between Fanstuff and The Weird One (Couldn't think of a better name, sorry) was funny and I want them to be friends.

What happened in what I came up for them, because I'll probably never actually write it. )

What was I talking about before... Oh yeah. I kind of want to create my own forum that lets everyone in equally, but with the hrwiki as popular is it, and with my organisational and promoting skills as bad as they are, it'd most likely crash and burn. I guess it might make a pretty pattern on the way down, though.

Well that post was all over the place.

"Three minutes!"
"Th-this is where I am!"
"Yes! Will you bow down to us now?"
"We would rather die than bow down to you!"
"Pity." (Nukes continent)

And that is why I shouldn't write dialogue when I'm half asleep. "This is where I am!" I think that last line is okay, though.

Also, I probably won't be on much over Easter. I'm volunteering at the Folk Festival, and it turns out we're camping there. They have internet access, though. I'll be able to keep the promise I made to myself that I'd update every day this month.

I'm still working on the Homestar-Runner-As-An-Anime-That-Has-Seemingly-Nothing-To-Do-With-Homestar-Runner thing. I realised that it probably needed some villains, so I thought some up. Now I'm really attached to one of them, even though I haven't written him yet or anything. I want to save him, and hug him, and send him to the canon universe for rehabilitation.

He's a character I made up. This is ridiculous.

It turned out, after much experimentation, that writing actually alleviated my depression. Writing. Wow. I wouldn't have guessed that, but I'll have to remember that for next time.

Here's what I wrote.

It was, as usual, Homestar Runner fanfiction. Is it ever not? The answer, of course, is yes, but not recently. Homeschool is in it and I made him a comics fan. Heh. But I wrote it while watching Sheep in the Big City, so the tone seems a bit off. Sheep in the Big City is also where I got this new icon. Fwoosh! I love Ben Plotz so much.

I was also cheered up by the game of Mario Party DS I played with my brother and sister. I won, but I think that was probably luck. I didn't really know how to play. Still, it was a lot of fun and I should probably do it again sometime.

This is a list of every story online that I've written. So I can keep them straight. I've been meaning to do this for a while. And I could really use a writing icon.

A lot of these are quite short, especially the Homestar Runner ones.

I've definitely been feeling less creative than usual today. It's annoying. I seem to be having trouble writing voices too. And posting entries longer than two paragraphs.

I spent a bit of time today doing a fan character art meme. I think Numbuh 239 makes a cute stick figure.

I don't know if anyone's going to take me up on this, but I'm taking fanfiction requests. Comment with the fandom and what you want the story to be about, and I'll write a short (word counts measured in the hundreds) story about it. Because I need the practice.

Fandoms I'm willing to write in:
Animorphs
Banjo-Kazooie
Chrono Trigger
Discworld
Earthbound (But not Mother 3 as I haven't played it yet)
Harry Potter
Homestar Runner
The Melanchony of Haruhi Suzumiya (anime only, I haven't finished all the novels)
The Neverhood
Obernewtyn
Order of the Stick
Psychonauts
Star Control 2
Tales of Symphonia

Also, I just watched some of the new members of Parliament getting sworn in on TV. They had to swear to God that they would be loyal to Queen Elizabeth II, and for some reason, the House of Representitives was teal. I've been there, and it's definitely green. It even looked green at another angle when they were going inside. I guess there was something wrong with the TV camera? And another thing. Parliament House has the shiniest floors I have ever seen. I always felt nervous about walking over them. That's how shiny they are.

Ah, there's nothing like freaking out over a bunch of fictional characters that aren't even yours being written wrong, and having to watch them in their native habitat to take away the taint. Of them being written wrong. <--I don't know why I wrote that in a Strong Bad voice either.

I wish I knew how to teach this doing-the-voices-right thing. I am doing the voices right, aren't I? Maybe I should get more than one. Fandom, I mean. Psychonauts or Star Control 2 sound good.

Writing Strong Bad complaining about being slashed made me feel a better. Writing usually does.

The TV Tropes Wiki was right. Sailor Nothing is quite good. I'm really enjoying it so far, even if the occasional gratuitous Japanese is a bit a grating.

The only problem is, I got out of the creative slump I was in and want to write something, but I can't because reading a story while writing plays havoc with my writing voice. But this story is the internet equivilant of unputdownable, whatever that is. Unclosetabable?

This is disturbing Homestar Runner slash for [info]capslock_hsr. The conceit is that the characters comissioned my self-insertion to write it as revenge against each other. But I took out the framing bits, because I don't think anyone wants to read about my self-insertion.

I feel so weak and uninspired. Probably because I haven't eaten much since I got home from Tasmania last week. Time for some hot chips or Doritos or something, I think. Because they're so healthy and nutritious.

I have got to write a long, popular and well written fanfic. It's like one of my fandom ambitions, or something. So I think I'll work on that. After I've eaten more.

Speaking of fanfiction, the TV Tropes Wiki has said these thing on Homestar Runner slash:

Naturally, you can't type in "Homestar Runner fanfic" on Google without some (Okay, a lot of) slash showing up.

Naturally, you can't type in "Homestar Runner fanfic" on Google without some slash showing up. Just don't try it on deviantART.

Naturally, you can't type in "Homestar Runner fanfic" on Google without some slash showing up. Just don't try it on deviantART, unless you enjoy your eyes melting out of your skull.

I made the second edit because I tried Googling Homestar Runner fanfic, and found the first page Homestar Runner's fanfiction.net section, which has three slash fics out of 105, two of which you won't even see unless you change the rating to M, and a list of fics I wrote for fanfic100, which has one slash fic out of 33 29.

Then there's no more slash until page 10, at which point the two slash centric deviantART Homestar Runner clubs, HRslashfans and HAVoC--Fan--Club, show up in the results. That's hardly a lot. How many people are going to search that far back?

I also found a part of the wiki where someone, in the process of proposing a new trope, mentioned that there are an alarming amount of Homestar/Strong Bad stories. I can count the number of Homestar/Strong Bad fics currently online on the fingers of one hand. (Doing so) E-mail/Underwear, Where In The World, Opposites Attract, HEY STWONG BAD, Criminal Projective. See? Barely any. But that's just off the top of my head, so I could be wrong about that.

In conclusion, the new email has caused the TV Tropes Wiki to grossly overestimate the amount of Homestar Runner slashfic on the net, and lack of food has caused the part of my brain that makes my writing coherent and not go off on tagents to shut down to conserve enegry.

OOC premises

Why do I keep having dreams that unsettle me? I'm scared of ants, and I keep dreaming about them, and last night I had a dream that I got dropped off on Black Mountain, only I didn't realise it was Black Mountain until I saw the Telstra Tower. Seeing the Telstra Tower close up freaks me out even when I'm prepared for it, so that was a big shock. Also, I don't think the back of Black Mountain is covered in dry grass, but it was a dream, so whatever.

Anyway. I was thinking about fanfiction premises and whether any could be inherently OOC and impossible to do well. And I decided that they could.

I also decided to post about it. I'm really only talking about one fic here )
